'We arrived at Porto airport just before 9am on Sunday 9th May to find all flights had been cancelled due to the volcanic ash cloud. What was one to do about getting home from there? We were fortunately travelling with Woods Travel. By 11.30am we were told that transport was on its way to take us to a beach hotel where lunch, dinner, B & B had been booked at a four star hotel (that provided five star services & food). From there (leaving at 4.30am on Monday), we were booked to be taken by coach, to Santander & booked in cabins for the ferry crossing to arrive in Portsmouth at 5.00pm Tuesday 11th May.

For these arrangements to be organised so quickly we have to thank Roger Elsmere, Managing Director of Woods Travel (who was travelling with us). Not only had he arranged a 5-star cruise on the river Douro, his prompt and professional action gave us confidence that all would be well as we settled down to sleep in readiness for the 4.30am start.

A sudden phone call to our rooms told us we had 20 minutes to get dressed, packed and report to reception, as a coach was picking us up to take us to the airport as the skies were clear! We arrived at Gatwick at 2.15am where our coach had been re-scheduled and all the return taxis to take us to our final destinations. We can't thank Roger and his staff back in Bognor enough for the extra effort they put in to ensure we all enjoyed our unforgettable holiday on the river Douro.

We shall be travelling again with Woods as we feel a larger holiday company could not have acted so quickly in a similar emergency.'
