White Swan Hotel
This 300-year-old coaching inn, situated right in the heart of Alnwick, has been tastefully modernised to retain a lot of its character and charm. The hotel contains the staircase and panelling taken from ‘The SS Olympic’ – sister ship to The Titanic. The 57 en suite rooms are equipped with TV, telephone, hairdryer, ironing facilities and hospitality tray. The hotel does not have a lift but a limited number of ground floor rooms, with only a few steps, are available.
ITINERARY
Day 1 After an early departure we travel via the Dartford Crossing and the Great North Road to Northumbria, with suitable stops for refreshments along the way.
Day 2 Today we visit Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland and the second largest inhabited castle in England. We have time to explore the castle and the beautiful gardens before returning to our hotel.
Day 3 We travel along the beautiful Northumbrian coast with views of Lindisfarne or Holy Island, once the cradle of Christianity. We visit Bamburgh Castle with its unsurpassed views from its rocky plateau, to see the fortifications, museum and grounds.
Day 4 This morning we travel to Wallington House to tour the house with its Pre-Raphaelite Central Hall, Edwardian conservatory and delightful walled garden. In the afternoon we visit Cragside, the home of Lord Armstrong, Victorian inventor and landscape genius. The house is crammed with ingenious gadgets and was the first house in the world to be lit with hydro-electricity.
Day 5 We set off today to the Northumberland National Park, making a stop at Bellingham before visiting Chesters Roman Fort. The fort was built to guard the bridge which carried Hadrian’s Wall over the River North Tyne. We can explore the entire foundations, including the courtyard, hall, regimental temple and the largest most luxurious building – the Commandant’s house.
Day 6 Departing after breakfast we make our way south by way of the beautiful conservation town of Stamford. We reach the coast in the evening, transfer to our taxis and home.
