Snowdonia is the magical setting for our journey into railway nostalgia in North Wales. We travel on the newest section of the Welsh Highland Railway including the Aberglaslyn Pass, closed for over 60 years, but now restored to its former glory. We also take to the rails on old favourites Ffestiniog and Bala, and visit the remarkable village of Portmeirion.
ITINERARY
Day 1 After being picked up from your door and taken to our coach, we travel west via Telford and Llangollen, making suitable refreshment stops along the way and reaching our hotel in Snowdonia late afternoon.
Day 2 This morning we take a scenic drive through Snowdonia to Betws-y-Coed where we have free time for lunch. In the afternoon we board the Bala Lake Railway. The 2ft narrow gauge steam trains give excellent views of the lake amid its surrounding pastoral and woodland scenery, and of the nearby mountains. We rejoin our coach and return to our hotel.
Day 3 Today we travel to the famous Italianate village of Portmeirion. The setting for the TV show ‘The Prisoner’, Portmeirion stands on a rugged clifftop overlooking Cardigan Bay. In the afternoon we visit Blaenau Ffestiniog and board the narrow gauge railway for a scenic ride over the mountains back to Porthmadog.
Day 4 This morning we return to Porthmadog to board the Welsh Highland Railway for a journey along its entire 25m length to Caernarfon, travelling through the magnificent Aberglaslyn Pass, dramatic Welsh scenery and views across the Menai Straits to Anglesey. Once in Caernarfon, you can enjoy some free time here, or your driver will take you to Llanberis to ride on the Snowdon Mountain Railway, a dramatic and beautiful journey, but very weather dependent. (approx £26. Must be requested when booking).
Day 5 Leaving Beddgelert after breakfast, we travel southwards toward home making suitable refreshment stops along the way. We reach the local area early evening where we meet our taxis.
